You know, I agree with your post on my blog about DT. I have listened to the album probably ten times by now and it has really gotten into my head. Like you wrote to me, now that I have hearrd more of the intricasies of the songwriting I appreciate the album on a whole new level. I have heard melodic snippets in certain songs that connect them to other songs in the album as well as to other DT albums as well. And the whole thing about them playing more accessible music is really a necessary thing in my opinion. While most of the songs are a departure from the normal DT style they are still badass compositions in their own right. DT chose to place more of their homages to other bands in this album and are not ashamed of it. And those dissenters out there who think that DT has sold out and made radio friendly crap need to realize that those guys can play in this style and completely OWN all the other bands on the scene today. They're like, "Lets do straight up rock and pop and kick it up a notch and kick the shit out of all the bands who play in this style for their entire career. Let's do this for one album BECAUSE WE CAN and then go back to where we are most familiar." That's how I interpret it anyway. Track six, Never Enough, says it all. They are basically telling all the picky, finnicky DT fans out there to get a fucking life and embrace change, diversity, and the PROGRESSIVE nature of life. These guys are in their forties. They don't need to shred all the time.

Anyway, that's my reaction for now.

Read this article from the Dream Theater website forum and you will appreciate this album in a whole new light. Especially when you read about the "easter eggs" mentioned there!
